Wetsuits Terminology Explained

We stock a wide range of wetsuits suitable for all climates

Summer wetsuits are usually of 3mm neoprene and although often called summer wetsuits they are used for around 8-9 months of the year.

Winter wetsuits  are usually of 5mm neoprene or 6mm and used in the late winter months plus best used all round in the far north of Scotland or Ireland as the water temperatures there are relatively low all year round.

Wetsuit Terminology

Wetsuits especially for surfing are very technical with all sorts of terms to describe what the wetsuit is made of and how the wetsuit is contructed (put together). Some of the terms used for wetsuit tecnology are shown below:

Overlock
Overlock is the simplest construction method of constructing wetsuits, thread is stitched around two edges of neoprene. This type of stitch can only be used on neoprene up to 3mm and is only suitable for summer suits.

Flatlock
Flatlock is created by stitching the wetsuit neoprene together, creating a flat seam. This is comfortable, but can only be used on neoprene up to 3mm and is therefore only suitable for summer suits.

Blindstitch
Blindstitch is produced by gluing neoprene together, this is followed by stitching that does not penetrate the outside pf the neoprene. Tape can be added to stress points for extra strength. All winter suits should be made this way.

Armatex

Armatex is an extra tough form of Neoprene, used mainly in areas that require more protection from wear and tear such as the knee area.

XTRA STRETCH

Xtra Stratch or X-Xstrtch is an extra supple neoprene that stretches equally in all directions. It offers ultimate flexibility, comfort and performance in wetsuits

YKK Zip

Recognised worldwide as the top quality zip for wetsuits.

Heat Taping

A heat reactive tape used to secure stress points on internal seam joints.

Ankle Straps

Constructed form hook and loop fabric, prevents cold water flushing inside legs.

Aerocore

A light warm and highly comfortable lining fabric knitted with Tetron Polyester. The hollow yarn contains volumes of air which is the key to the high heat insulation. It also offers low water absorption and four way stretch, one of the newer wetsuit tecnologies.

Pre-Bent Knee

Reduces the amount of neoprene behind the knee for increased comfort.

Curvex Knee Pad

As dual Texture with the addition of greater lateral strength

3 x 2, 3 x 4 etc

Example 3 x 2 refers to 3mm neoprene in the wetsuit body and 2mm in the sleeves.

Key Pocket

Internal pocket designed to keep your keys securely.

Liquid Seal

liquid seal is in effect what it says, a seal that is very pliable silicon type rubber for want of a descciption, tis is applied to the seals of the wetsuit sometimes inside , but that sticks to the hairs on your arms legs etc but now more often on the outside of the wetsuit, it gives a perfect waterproof seal.

Titanium Core

A reflective core providing heat reflective qualities which is sandwiched between the neoprene and the nylon lining.

Dual Texture Kneepad

A highly durable knee pad printed using two layers of polyurethane inks.

Glide Skin

A smooth neoprene which offers excellent sealing and comfort on neck panels.

Liquid Tape

A cutting edge technology designed to provide 100% seal for blind stitch seams with maximum flexibility.

Double Lined Zip Flap

Extra insulating layer to protect the neck, shoulders and chest.

Double Lined.

An extra layer of nylon providing extra durabiliy
